French Take Prisoners In Sharp Clash

LONDON, December 18

An official French communique this evening announced that there was a sharp engagement between the Saar and the Vosges, when the French took some prisoners, including twd officers.

It was quiet elsewhere. A German communique states that artillery fire between the Moselle and the Pfalzer Wood was more active. The German Air Force carried out reconnaissance flights over Eastern France.

The massing of German troops between the left bank of the Rhine and the Luxemburg, Belgian and Dutch frontiers continues, says a correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.”

Twenty army corps are involved, each composed of two to three divisions, which are partly augmented by troops from Central Germany and Poland. The mechanised divisions on the Rhine have been largely reinforced and their firing power increased. Relations between the German troops and local civilians are unsatisfactory. Discontent is openly shown by the German troops, owing to the suppression of Christmas leave.

Conference. —Mr Chamberlain conconferred with the Prime Minister of France (M. Daladier) during his visit to Paris.
