24000 Australians For Empire Air Scheme

SYDNEY, This Day. THE PRIME MINISTER (MR. R. G. MENZIES) OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED THAT AUSTRALIA HAD UNDERTAKEN TO PROVIDE 26,000 MEN—IO,4OO PILOTS AND 15,600 OBSERVERS, WIRELESS OPERATORS AND GUNNERS—AS ITS INITIAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE EMPIRE AIR SCHEME.
Most of the men would bo trained in Australia
This adjustment of the original scheme, under which most of the men wNre to have beeen trained in Canada, was made, he said, on the representation of the Commonwealth Government, which had emphasised the value that participation in the scheme would be to Australia’s security if the greater part of the training were completed within the Commonwealth.
Mr Menzies revealed that Britain would make substantial contributions to the Australian scheme in finance, aircraft and instructors. The total cost of the scheme tc Australia, within the next three
years was estimated to be not less than £si>,oow,ooo in Australian currency.
