Simultaneous raids on two premises alleged to be common gaming houses were made early this afternoon by Whangarei police. Detective J. B. Finlay, assisted by Constables A. Carson and F. Higgins, raided premises in de Tourret Buildings and arrested Charles Thomas Arthur Clarke.

Senior-Sergeant A. Henderson and Detective Miller raided a shop in Cameron Street and arrested Allan Arthur Angelo. Each was later charged before Mr L. J. Brake, J.P., with using premises as a common gaming house and was remanded to appear at the Whangarei Court on Monday. Bail of £IOO was allowed in each case.

The American steamer Stanwood (1129 tons) sank in Falmouth Harbour while attempts were being made to put out a fire on board. All of the crew were rescued except for the Canadian wireless operator.
