Out and About In The North
Onerahi On Wednesday evening the Onerahi Town Hall .was very well filled with parents, children and friends at an entertainment erganiesd by Miss Lily McNaughton, of the Waikaraka Hapu Club, to augment the funds to send a member to the Centennial celebrations in Wellington. During the evening Stella Turketo was drawn as the lucky member to visit the Centennial,, and she was given a hearty clap. Miss Lily McNaughton thanked the audience for their support. The gathering then took the form of doing honour to Miss Handforth, who is giving up the superintendency of the Onerahi Sunday School, and also Mr D. Hawkes, who has assisted for the last two years, and is now expecting to leave for camp shortly.
Mr F. Drake, on behalf of the parents and pupils, past and present, presented Miss Handforth with a beautifully bound copy of Sir Walter Scott’s poems, and also a beautiful picture-backed dressing table set. Mr D. Hawkes was presented with a handsome shaving set, and the best of wishes. Personal. Mrs Peter Pullman is holidaying in Wellington, and is staying with her son, Mr John Pullman. Mrs John Pullman, of Wellington, is visiting her parents. Mr and Mrs G. Hawkes. Mrs and Miss Rule have returned from a holiday in the Whangarei vicinity. Miss Jean Clark Campbell, of Auckland. is the guest of Mrs J. W. Mason, for the summer holidays. Mrs E. Edwards is spending a few months in Sydney.
Kohukohu The town hall was a scene of merriment on the occasion, of the Christmas carnival, held by the Methodist Church in aid of circuit funds. Stall-holders were:—Sewing, Mrs J. Wark; cooking, Mrs Cobbald; sweets, Mrs L. Ashworth; produce, Mesdames W. Baker and J. Nash; teas, Mrs J. Pearson; hoop-la. Mr L. Pearson. Winners of competitions were: Shooting, B. Smith; bagatelle. G. Morrell; putting, Miss B. Beilis; ladies’ nail-driving. Miss Dolly Hawkins; men's nail-driving, Ralph Pearson, who also won a special points prize in this contest.
Fairburns. Parents’ day at the Fairbunrs School was a complete success. The prizes were presented by Mrs Vazey, the wife of the teacher. A calf parade resulted; Bob Coulter I. Sinclair Eebbett 2, Laurel Tracey 3. There were twenty entries. The children provided afternoon ’tea.
Towai The children who attended the annual fancy dress evening, organised by the W.D.F.U.. had a very happy time. Prizes were awarded as follows: Prettiest wee tot, Master J. Ralls. '■Cupid”; best couple, the little Tom and ' Lena Williams, ‘‘Bride and Groom”; best dressed girl. Miss Dorothy Ralls, ‘‘Waterfall”; best dressed boy, Baden Dix, ‘‘Lord Nelson”: most original. Lad Seales, “Champion Flour”; Cox. “Nine of Spades”: Willis Ralls. “Kangaroo”; Peter Bartlett, “Persian Prince”; Billy Grey, “Black Moth.” A lucky number competition was won by Mr C. Clarke.
Kaikohe Mr E. H. Roberts, of the Auckland Teachers’ Training College, is staying with his parents for the Christmas vacation.
Mrs D. Fletcher, who has been visiting Australia for the past five months, returned to Kaikohe on Thursday.
Messrs A. White, B. Eisenhut. and N. Guthrie, who have been attending military training, are home on a fortnight’s Christmas leave. Mr J. B. Smith, chief inspector to the Bay of Islands Power Board, has accepted a position in Wellington.
Omahuta Mr M Jeffery' who has been teacher of the Omahuta School foi the past twelve months, and who has been transferred to Waiotira, was the guest of honour at a farewell party, held at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. Maxwell on Wednesday evening.
After representatives of settlers, school committee and cricket club had spoken eulogistically of Mr Jeffery he was presented with a set of hair brushes.
Among those present were: Mr and Mrs A. Maxwell, Mr and Mrs W. H. Robinson, Mr and Mrs F. W. Messenger, Mr and Mrs Colin Pearson, Mr and Mrs F. L. Holland; Misses A. and L. Pearson, C. Robinson, M. and J. Dernest and Messrs Dernest, E. Crane, Jos. Pearson, M. and R. Crallan, J. Templeton, W. ,Gurney, C. and F. Walker. E. Nisbet, G. gnd J. Cauty, S. Messenger, R. Guset, and N. and D. Mcßae.
Maungakaramea The W.D.F.U. garden party held in Mrs Jack Belfield’s beautiful grounds was a greeit success. A bring-and-buy stall, in charge of Mrs Goodenough, did brisk business. Mrs L. O'Carroll won a cushion, and Mrs W. H. Gillingham won a nail-driving competition.
