Rumanian Gas Factories Explode, Killing Thousands
(Received 11.30 a.m.) BUCHAREST, December 14. An explosion of chlorine gas tanks at a cellulose factory, in the small village of Zarnesti, in Transylvania caused appalling loss of life. It is reported that the whole factory staff ,of 1000 perished, either as the result of the poison gas, which spread many miles, or in the subsequent fire which consumed the whole village of Zarnesti. Hundreds more were killed by gas in the surrounding district. Killed While Asleep. Excess pressure in the pipes caused the explosion, and the fumes spread rapidly among workers! Then two containers blew and whole families in houses a mile away from the factory were killed by the gas while asleep. The fireman of a passenger train standing at a station 250 yards away was .killed. Passengers fled from the station while the staff remained but all were killed by the gas. Hundreds fleeing into the forest died in their tracks.
