Humour in Kaikohe Court. An amusing incident occurred in the Kaikohe Court on Thursday when a Maori labourer was being crossexamined in a civil action. Asked by counsel if he was a married man, the Maori replied: “Yes. But lam a widow now.”
Kirioke Wins Chalenge Cup, For the fifth occasion, the Kirioke Native School, near Kaikohe, has again won the Challenge Cup presented by the Bay of Islands A. and P. Association for the best school garden in the Bay and Whangarei Counties. Leper Funds. Mr. D. L. Thomas, North Island Secretary to the Makogai Leper Fund, in a letter to the “Northern Advocate,” Kaikohe, expressed appreciation of the excellent donations made towards the Christmas cheer fund this year, and stated that 88 cases and 2 packages have been dispatched to the island. * * * * School Scholarship. Advice has been received in Kaikohe that Maisie Hohepa, a pupil of the Kirioke Native School, has been awarded a Government scholarship tenable for two years at the Queen Victoria College for Maori Girls, Auckland. 4 * * * Gifts for Troops. Two cases containing socks, pyjamas, cigarettes, sweets and Christmas puddings for issue to troops in camp were despatched by the Whangarei Patriotic Committee by train last evening to the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Committee.
Parking Change. Motorists have been accustomed to angle parking in Vine Street, but from today, parking parrallel to the kerb has been instituted. In the meantime, all-day parking fs to be permitted but later a time limit of 20 minutes will be set.
Kaikohe Street Lights. Steady progress is being made by the Bay Power Board employees with the erection of street lights in the Kaikohe town area, and the work should be completed this week. * « t * Child Injured. Ann Main, aged 18 months, of 37 Cairnfield Road, fell out of her cot at 8 o’clock on Wednesday evening, and fractured her left arm. She was admitted to the District Hospital, where she is progressing satisfactorily. * * * ** Stock on Road. Charged in the Rawene Magistrate’s Court on Thursday with allowing his stock to wander on the main Broadwood highway, Charles Frederick Harris was convicted and fined £1 with 10/ court costs. * if % ❖ False Name to Police. For hindering a constable by giving an incorrect name and address, Henry Job, alias Sandy Sandels, agter 19, of Kaitaia, was fined £1 with 10/ costs in the Rawene Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. He was fined a further 30/, with 10/ costs, on a charge of being drunk and disorderly at Mangamuka on October 20. * * * * Soldiers at Waipu Sports. Soldiers on leave from training with the Special Military Force are to be admitted free to the Scottish New Year sports and concert at Waipu. A decision to thi's effect was made by the committee handling the sports at a meeting this week, » •it « ♦ * Early buyers are wise buyers at Henry Wilson’s Grand Xmas Fair, now fairly in its stride. It behoves everyone. to take advantage ,of the special offerings in all departments throughout the store, and to spread out the Xmas shopping to ease the eleventh hour strain.
