The Pipe Band
THE fact that the Whangarei and County Pipe Band has been able to hand over to the St. John Ambulance Brigade a cheque for £2O is an achievement which deserves public notice. This amount was netted as the result of a concert given in Whangarei on St. Andrew’s night, and it goes to demonstrate what might be done for the benefit of the community if everybody was animated by the same spirit as that which has moved the Pipe Band since its inception. The band, which came into being as the outcome of effort on the part of Northland Scots in whom the pride of their ancestors still burns brightly, has achieved a remarkable record. Like the Village Blacksmith, the band is able to look the whole world in the face, for it owes not any man. Its members are clothed in tartan of the best description, and they possess all the equipment of an appropriately garbed piper, while the drums and other accessories are of high order. The whole cost of uniforms and equipment, totalling £3OO, has been m,et by subscriptions from Scottish supporters, by the promotion of concerts and other money-raising efforts, and by a subsidy. , . Congratulations are offered to the band on its very fine achievement.
