Want Harbour Stockyards To Stay
Whether stockyards erected by the board should be dismantled because of the little; use being made of the facilities, was the subject of a report submitted to the Whangarei Harbour Board at the monthly meeting today. A special • committee set up to inquire into me yards and the storing of timber at the slipway, reported that, after ,an inspection, the engineer (Mr W. M. Fraser) had -been instructed to have the txnroer and other material tidied and stowed.
Regarding the stockyards, instructions had been given him to ascertain from the stock agents their views whether the retention of the yards was warranted, as no use had been
made of them for the past two years
A meeting of representatives of the stock companies had been held, stated Mr T. Mitchell, in a letter to the board, expressing regret that the yards had been so rarely used.
“A determining factor has been the impossibility of securing scows for the transport of livestock”’ he said. “If this position improves, the yards may be used more frequently, and, while we cannot give any assurance that sufficient use will be made of them to justify asking the board to refrain from demolishing them, we would like the yards to be left there, if possible.’’ No good purpose would be served in demolishing the yards, if there was a possibility of them being utilised," commented Mr H. E. Hewlett.
The report was adopted and the letter received.
