“Up In Mabel’s Room” Got The Laughs

The fine show at the Town Hall last evening was worthy of a larger audience. The Celebrity Comedy Company presented ‘‘Up In Mabel’s Room,” the successor to “Charley’s Aunt” in their two night’s showing in the Town Hall. That the entertainment was appreciated was shown in the generous applause after the closing scene, when the cast made their farewell bows. ■ Principal comedian, Don Nicol, has made a rapid bid for fame in “Balalaika” and “White Horse Inn” and in last night's show he was well in the honours. Shirley Ann Richards, who headed the feminine side of the cast, is making her first appearance on tour in New Zealand and will be remembered by picture-goers for her fine work in “Tall Timbers,” “Lovers and Luggers” and “Dad and Dave Come to Town.” The rest of the cast were well in keeping and gave all the support needed.

Don Nicol plays the part of Garry Ainsworth, an ultra-circumspect young man, whose only apparent indiscretion was committed two years prior to his marriage and concerned the gift of a piece of lingerie.

Round this garment were woven many hilarious situations, and the efforts to retrieve it from circulation provoked many hearty laughs from last night’s audience. It is to be sincerely hoped that this talented company will again visit Whangarei in the not too distant future and that when it does come, it will meet with the bumper house it well deserves.
