Detained.—The United States coastguard has detained five trawlers purchased by France as minesweepers, pending a ruling by the AttorneyGeneral (Mr Frank Murphy) as to whether Germany would be entitled to damages from the United States in the event of the vessels damaging German property. Three other trawlers sailed earlier. Gifts. —The Dominions Secretary (Mr Anthony Eden) today acknowledged on behalf of the Government numerous Christmas gifts. Accidents. —It has been officially announced that 926 people were killed in road accidents in England, of which 674 occurred during blackouts, in November compared with 919 in October and 613 in November, 1938. Arrests. —Twenty-seven members of the Dutch Nazi Party, who were doing military training in an underground room, were arrested. They sang the “Horst Wessel Song.”
