Northlands Dairy Stock

!T is generally admitted that Northland has no superior as a dairying territory. Climate is of inestimable importance to the dairying industry and, because of that fact, Northland dairymen enjoy natural advantages which are the envy of their brethren in many portions of the Dominion. The gifts of nature, however, will not suffice to make successful the task of the farmer, who must co-operate with brain and muscle in the utilisation of the gifts.

It is therefore gratifying to hear the comments of Jersey classification officers who have just completed an official tour of Northland. They have made a thorough inspection of the Jersey herds which form an integral portion of the butterfat producers of the North, and they declare that the stock which came under their notice is of a fine standard, and that breeders have been very careful in the establishment and development of proved strains. This is sound policy, as evidenced by the output records which are the pride of producers. So long as farmers are determined to breed from nothing but the best strains and to put into practice all knowledge which experience and research have made available, the fertile soil of Northland will continue to be a powerful ally in the production of wealth.

The productivity of land already in occupation has been largely increased iii recent years, and, with the areas still awaiting development, the outlook for Northland may be surveyed through the glasses of optimism 1 . Nature has dealt bountifully with this territory, and it is good to know that the farming community are doing their part, so far as the building up of herds is concerned, at any rate, to take advantage of nature’s gift.
