Opperman.—The well-known cyclist Hubert Opperman created a new world’s unpaced cycling record, covering 5057, miles in 24 hours at Melbourne. He averaged over 21 miles per hour, and made the ride without dismounting.

Tote.—The managing director oi Australian Automatic Totalisator. Ltd. (Mr Lindsay Raymond) demonstrated a totalisator unit before a committee of New York race track promoters. They decided that this type of totalisator be installed in 1940 on the race tracks throughout the Stales.

Pilots.—Eighteen pilots will pass out of the elementary flying training school at Bell Block on December 18 for the intermediate and advanced course at Blenheim. They will be the first draft to complete elementary training. Satisfaction with the station and training was expressed by GroupCaptain L. M. Isitt. acting Chief of Air Staff, after an inspection yesterday.

Escaped.—When the name of John Burgess, aged 40, a fireman, was called in the Wellington police court on a theft charge, the police reported that Burgess has escaped from the Wellington Public Hospital, to which ho had been taken after his arrest. He was still at large. The charge was adjourned sine die.

Sanders Cup.—The yacht Ripple was chosen by the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association as this year’s challenger for the Sanders Cup. The challenge was made following a lengthy dispute over the conduct of tire trials, which led. to the withdrawal of the Val, the winner on points in the first series of five races.
