A total of 230.000 have departed from Helsingfors
Householders were ordered, before leaving, to pour water inside and outside their dwellings and leave it to freeze. The object is to minimise the effects of incendiary bombs.
The evacuation of Germans from Helsingfors was completed this morning. The Soviet Legation staff was also taken off in a German vessel. The Finnish authorities state that the Finns defeated the Russians in a big battle 50 miles north from. Salraijervi, a small town near the Arctic Coast, west of Petsamo, and close to the Norwegian border.
It is reported from Bergen, Norway, that the Finns are fighting doggedly in the extreme north. The port of Petsamo was recaptured yesterday from the Russians,
The Finnish troops who were responsible marched all night over roads deep in snow, and surprised the Russians, who did not dream a counter-attack would come so soon.
Finnish aircraft eo-operatod, heavily bombing the 'Russian positions.
The fate of the Finnish fofee previously ent off in the vicinity of Petsamo is not, known.
Refugees who quadrupled the population of the Norwegian village of Svanyrk explained the orderliness and foresight of the Finnish action.
A squadron of Russian warships attended by aeroplanes approached Petsamo on Friday, compelling the defenders to withdraw until they could engage the enemy on land.
