Naval Patrol Boat Stops Excursion Ship
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
Wi'th between 400 and 500 passenger's aboard, the excursion steamer Duchess, bound from Waiheke to Auckland, was stopped by a naval patrol boat in the eastern passage last evening.
The Duchess was refused admittance through the passage under the harbour control war precautions, and was forced, to steam an extra 20(*miles to enter port through the Rangitoto Channel.
Over Hour Late
She reached her berth shortly after 9 p.m., more than an hour late. The Duchess was unable, because of an exceptionaly low tide, to leave the Matiatia Wharf until 6.35 p.m., 35 minutes late.
Port regulations required the vessel to be off Bean Kock by 7.30 p.m. in order to use the passage.
Although it was still daylight, the ship was ordered not to take the passage course, but to proceed into the Hauraki Gulf round Motutapu and Rangitoto Islands, and enter port through the Rangitoto Channel.
