Twenty-Five Years Ago

A telegram from the Secretary for the Colonies announced that the Australian and New Zealand Expeditionary Forces had disembarked at Egypt to assist in the defence of that country, and to complete their training there.

When their training was completed, both contingents would proceed direct to the front alongside other British troops.

A message from Berlin stated that the Turks, under German direction were constructing a military railroad from Maan to the Suez Canal. A Frenchman confined in the Lancaster concentration camp, toho }moved his identity and received his discharge, said he was leaving to join the French Army. This roused the fury of his fellow prisoners, who wounded him in the head. Soldiers fixed bayonets to quell the riot. The Italian Premier (Signor Salandra) declared at the oldening of Parliament that the neutrality of Italy could not be the exclusive aim of Italian policy.

King George, President Poincare, King Albert, Lord Kitchener and General French met near Ypres and visited the British lines. The King addressed the troops and encouraged them. The Prince of Wales was also present at the meeting.
