The giving of the Nazi salute, accompanied by the verbal phrase, “Heil Hitler” to three young men celebrating their enlistment late yesterday afternoon, resulted in what the police described as a nasty mix-up in the bar of a city hotel. As a sequel, Nelson McKnight, 36, a plumber, appeared in the Court today charged with behaving in a disorderley manner while drunk. He pleaded guilty. __ Said He Was Half-German
Sub-Inspector Pender said that McKnight, after giving the salute, told the young men that he was half German and had not been interned. McKnight was struck by one of the men and a nasty mix-up followed. McKnight said that he had spoken in fun, and wanted the men to have a drink with him. Mr F. Levien, S.M., said that McKnight had not demanded to be assaulted.
“Deserved What He Got”
■One of the men who had enlisted might have put him out of the bar. The sub inspector said: I think he deserved what he got. “Others got mixed up in the trouble, and the situation got a bit nasty. McKnight was put out of the bar.” The magistrate: You did not tell me that before. McKnight was fined 30/-.
