The Mayors Appeal
HIS Worship the Mayor of Whangarei, Mr. W. Jones, makes, through the correspondence columns of the “Advocate” to-day, an appeal which we are convinced will meet with a hearty response from the people of the town, and of Northland generally. Mr. Jones has stated in plain language the duty and privilege of everybody to support to the utmost of their capacity all efforts made to raise funds for patriotic purposes. He is undoubtedly stating a fact when he says that men and women in every part of the country have been awaiting an opportunity to make some practical contribution to war work. That opportunity has now come, and there are countless ways in which help may be given. The Whangarei District Patriotic Committee has opened a public patriotic subscription list at the Town Hall, and this is to be a feature of the direct appeal for funds which the committee is making. We heartily support the Mayor’s appeal on behalf of this movement, and commend to our readers a perusal of the outline he has given of the national scheme for the raising of patriotic funds. It may again be emphasised that the collection and distribution of funds raised for patriotic funds are entirely in the hands of the people, through their representatives on district committees, the provincial councils and the national councils which have been set up. The Government of the day has handed over to these councils the absolute control of funds, so that the State will neither handle nor allocate the money In this way the people have been given a unique opportunity to help the men who have willingly offered themselves to their country in its hour of need.
