“Most Important Statement Of War”
(Received 2.30 p.m.) RUGBY, November 27,
The “Daily Telegraph” describes Mr Chamberlain’s broadcast as the most important speech of the war. The “Daily Mail” says his calm words reflect the iron will of the British people. The “Daily Express” says < the speech stamps Mr Chamberlain as a real leader of a
people at war. Special prominence is given to his statement of war and peace aims. The “News Chronicle,” which among other newspapers has called for a more precise statement on the sort of Europe that is to be created when the war is won, enthusiastically welcomes the speech, declaring that the aims could hardly have been stated in more specific form. “The Daily Telegraph” comments: “This definition of peace as a matter for settlement by world congress of nations goes far beyond any former declaration of the Allies. Broad Principles. “Mr Chamberlain stated broad principles. “Economic nationalism must give way to the flow of trade. “Internal government of a State will be no concern of any other, but external pol-
icy must be peaceful. “Then may come gradual disarmament.
“It will take long to establish such conditions.
“We have to end the Hitler reign of terror before the foundation of a new Europe can be laid. “But the cause is great and will prevail.”
