The Northern Advocate Daily “NORTHLAND FIRST”

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1939. Socks for Soldiers

I Registered for transmission through Hie post as a Newspaper |

WITH the war entering upon a new stage marked by increasing violence, coupled with the knowledge that New Zealand troops are going overseas, there should be a prompt and substantial response to the appeal to build up patriotic funds. The, Auckland Provincial campaign-for direct donations to approved patriotic purposes was launched last night by Sir Ernest Davis, acting in his capacity as chairman of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council. .... This council includes the whole of Northland in its jurisdiction, all districts therein being represented. The operations of the council are therefore of as much interest to the settlers in the farthest North as they are to the citizens of Auckland city and southern portions of the province. The whole provincial territory has been invested with the obligation and privilege of raising funds for the benefit of all men who place their services, and, if need be, their lives, at the disposal of their country. The funds are not only for the purpose of providing comforts needed immediately by men in camp, but for the assistance of New Zealand soldiers when they return home from the war. The whole patriotic effort is being made by the people themselves, and the administration of funds is in the hands of the people’s specially appointed representatives, the Government standing aside and having no hand in the control of the money raised. . ~ ■ ' The Auckland Provincial Council has commenced operations with an appeal which we feel sure will be welcomed by the women of Northland, who have been awaiting an opportunity to engage in war work. It is desired, among other things, to provide the soldiers with socks at Christmas time, and accordingly arrangements have been made for wool to be made available for knitters. That there will be a widespread response may be taken for The announcement that the council has made a bulk purchase of 6000 pounds of wool for distribution to zone committees is a matter which calls for comment. It is to be hoped that this decision was not reached without a thorough investigation having been made, for it seems that the supply of wool might well have been left to the business people in the various localities.
