Further 2 Inches Rain Brings Fall To 4 Inches
Nearly four inches of rain has fallen in Whangarei during the past three days. The total from Saturday morning until this morning w,as 3.98 in., the fall for 24 hours to Sunday morning being .95 in., to yesterday morning, 1.23 in., and to this morning 1.80 in. Following steady rain on Sunday and yesterday, the fall continued throughout last evening and early this morning to record the heaviest fall for some time and bring the total for the month to 5.03 in.
Yesterday farmers expressed delight at the continuous steady rain which meant new life to parched pastures, but it was noted that it had not penetrated as deeply as was expected, owing to the surface soil having spongy thirstiness.
The addition of nearly two inches of further rain has meant that the water has now penetrated more deeply and will provide greater resistance to early summer heat. Lightening of clouds this morning promised a clearing of the weather which, however, was not fulfilled, intermittent rain continuing throughout the morning and afternoon. The Dargaville rainfall for the weekend and yesterday morning totalled I.Bolns.
