Mangapai
The November meeting was well attended. Miss Holmes presided. The roll-call, “My most vivid impression of Cecil Houses Scheme,’ was answered by several members. Miss Holmes gave an interesting demonstration of needlework. An exhibition of books, old and new, caused a great deal of interest. A trade stall did brisk business. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Cotton and Way.
Oruru-Peria
A meeting of the Oruru-Peria Institute was held in Mrs Norman Jacentho’s residence on November 1. The motto for the day was: “The most comfortable place to live in is just inside your income.” The roll-call,' which was “A newspaper clipping,” was very amusing. The competition, “A house frock,” was won by Mrs Ben Trigg for the seniors, while tor the juniors Miss Betty Wraihail and Miss June Walmsley gained five points each. For the buiter sponge, Mrs A. Trigg came first, and Mrs E. Tracey was second. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Jacentho.
Puma
At the monthly meeting, held in the hall, only a small number of memoeis was present. After the usual business was dealt with, Miss Cookson and Mrs Inkster, of Whangarei, gave interesting talks on the Women’s Emergency Corps, after which a committee was formed to undertake a branch in the district. The competitions for the day resulted: Native berries and shrubs, Mrs J. Brown 1, Mrs E. Finlayson 2; plate of three biscuits, Mrs G. B. Dyer 1, Mrs E. Finlayson and Mrs S. Worsp equal 2. During the afternoon a short paper was read by Mrs Thomas. The hostesses for the day were Mrs R. Dyer, Mrs H. Heath and Miss Drake.
A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Miss Cookson and Mrs Inkster for their interesting talks.
Mangonui
At the meeting of the Mangonui Institute held on November 2, Mrs H. T. Wrathall presided. There was a good attendance, and one new member was admitted. The motto was: “Journeying on through the years, speak with kindness, cause no tears; do some good along the way; do a little every day.” Many useful suggestions were forthcoming at the roll-call as to how to spend an enjoyable social half-hour. The winners of the points competition were Mrs Harris and Mrs Feiss'c respectively, both ladies showing their skill in making jam tarts. The pastry was to be made with dripping. An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Wrathall and Harris.
Titoki
Mrs Alexander presided over a fair attendance of members. A letter of thanks from the Leper Christmas Fund was read. An excellent report on the halfyearly council meeting was given by Mrs Carruth. Owing to Mrs McCardle being unable to attend and give her talk on home nursing, Mrs Carruth gave a very interesting and learned talk on native flowers. The November competitions resulted; Plain scones, Mrs Hunt 1; butter scones, Mrs Phyn 1, Mrs Carruth 2. The roll-call, “Hints on poultices,” brought in some very helpful ideas.
Poroti
The October meeting was held in the hall and presided over by Mrs Robison. The Golden Thread was read, and a hat competition was won by Miss Joy Robison, with Mrs Oldfield, senr., second. A duet by Mrs Cutforth and Mrs Allen Jones was appreciated by members. This month the rolling shilling competition went to Mrs Cutforth. A fishing competition, arranged by Miss Hayes, was won by Mrs A. Jones. A trading table did brisk business, and the Institute funds benefited. The competition for the month, “A posy,” was awarded to Mrs A. Jones, with Mrs Croucher and Mrs Robison a tie for second place. The tea hostesses, Mrs Blackstock and Miss Eyes; served a dainty afternoon tea.
Kara
The Kara Women’s Institute held its fifth birthday party in the hall on October 19. There was a large attendance, including visitors from other Institutes. The National Anthem, the “Marseillaise” and the Institute song were sung. The president, Mrs Millar, extended a welcome to the visitors, and Mrs Ross, president of the Whangarei' District Federation, spoke briefly. A game of musical sticks was won by Mrs Kirk.
A short play, “Snowed in With a Duchess,” was put on, with the following cast: The Duchess of Salterton, Mrs Smith; Madame Value, Mrs Hodsell; Mrs Hodge, Mrs Luke; Mrs Cholmondeley-Jones, Mrs Courtney. A bouquet was presented to the producer, Mrs Kirk, also to Mrs Ross and Mrs Simmonds, of the District Federation, and to the Kara president, Mrs Millar. A musical competition, sponsored by Mrs Hodsell, was won by Mrs Milligan, and a treasure hunt by Miss McKegg. The junior members of the Institute sang an action song, “The Umbrella Man,” in costume, followed by “Little Sir Echo.” Mrs Ross sang and Mrs Mullineaux recited, both being encored. Afternoon tea was handed round, and Mrs Ross put the knife into the birthday cake, made by Mesdames Smith and Hodsell, and artistically iced by Mrs Kirk, after which ft was cut by the president, Mrs Millar.
Mrs Ross congratulated Kara on a most enjoyable afternoon.
