Match Famine; Tea Prices To Go Up
[Special to “Northern Advocate”! AUCKLAND, This Day. The scarcity of matches in New Zealand, owing to the banning of imports, has reached an acute stage. One chain store organisation has cleared all its stocks, and other stores are similarly placed. The public is on bare rations, undb 'in some shells the only matches available are those on small paper folders. Under authority from the Price Tribunal, grocers will be advancing tea by 4d to 6d per lb, according to the grades. This authority applies to supplies just landed, and on which the imported cost has jumped through the price rise in the Ceylon market, dearer freights and other items. This shipment is relatively small, but it will not be long before the rise will be operating in all shops, because they are almost bare of old stocks.
