| A high French military authi ority privately expressed his foref cast of the probable duration of | the war, provided the Germans i did not commit any great tacti-
cal error. He estimated that the Allies tvould march to Berlin in 1917. Details of the Ramscapelle fight showed that when superior forces of German marines, with naval guns, forced the Allies to evacuate Ramscapelle, 5000 Bengal Lancers were sent to the rescue. They dismounted, charged with lance in hand, and, amidst cheers, burst through, the ranks of the Allied infantry, who, in turn, charged with bayonets. The charge was irresistible, and the Germans retreated, leaving 12 naval guns and 1000 prisoners. The Crown Prince of Bavaria was reported to be distributing among the troops a so-called German “Hymn of Hate’’ expressing undying hatred towards England, and England alone. It was reported that the Turkish Treasury was empty and that an economic crisis threatened the country. Government employees had not received their salaries for several months, and the German supply of money was exhausted. A German spy was shot in the Tower of London grounds.
