High Wind, Poor Scoring In Second Round

N.Z. GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

[Spec'ial to “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day.

Though there was bright sunshine instead of rain at Miramar, a disconcerting northerly wind still prevailed for the second round of the New Zealand golf championship. At the head of the field, F. W. Dixon soon lost the advantage of his 76 yesterday, taking 87. On his heels came a youth of .17, K. Smith, a product of the Miramar caddy sanks. There was much merit in his 78, and his outward half in the scratch score of 37. Marshall’s 75 . Marshall, from Manor Park, in the Hutt Valley, carded 75, a score which good players will be pleased to equal. A birdie 3 at the fffth hole enabled him to pick up a stroke against the card, to be out in 36. Watson, whose 77 led for a good while yesterday, dropped back in his tsecond effort, his trouble starting at the tenth, where he duffed a drive which meant seven. Until noon, the only other competitor to return a good card was Whitfield with 76. lie is an Australian who came over to Wellington last year. Honours With Amateurs. Honours are with the amateurs at the end of the first day’s play. Of the 115 players competing, only two returned cards equalling 74—the scratch score of the Miramar course. They are R. H. Glading, of Hamilton, who may be regarded as the coming amateur champion of the Dominion, and the unattached professional, J. D. Mclntosh. It was unfortunate that a gusty northerly wind with driving rain robbed most of the competitors of chances of breaking 74, and many tales of misjudged shots were told when the day’s experiences were being related. Three professionals appear in the first five leaders, but 11 amateurs, all under 80, lead the next professional. Both last year’s amateur champion, P. G. F. Smith, and the professional champion, N. H. Fuller, are competing. In conjunction with yesterday’s play in the open and qualifying rounds of the amateur and professional championships, players competed for the Jellicoe Cup, for the best single round in the open, and the Bledisloe Cup for the leading amateur in the open.
