Leave While On Military Service
The effect of employees entering military service was fully discussed at the monthly meeting of the Bay County Council. A circular letter was received from the New Zealand Counties’ Association detailing the guarantees to be made to local body employees entering service.
These included the guarantee that when military service was completed men should be offered their former positions, and that leave should continue to accrue and be taken on discharge from the forces. Strong objection to the matter of leave was made by Cr. H. Smith. ‘Tf the employee is guaranteed his job, we should not have to give him his leave on top of that,” he said. “I do not object to keeping the men’s jobs open, for this is only right fn view of what occurred after the Great War. “However, we should not differentiate between employees and ratepayers’ sons, who will not obtain leave from any source unless employed by the county.” he stated. Cr. J. Hayes: We should not discriminate between the employee and those who are paying his wages. It was then unanimously resolved, on the motion of Cr. Smith, seconded by Cr, J. T. McKeown, that the recommendations be adopted with the exception of the clause concerning leave.
