Vegetable-Growing Scheme Held Up
It does not.appear as though the Government’s much-publicised vege-table-growing scheme will be pursued until next season. Indication to this effect was given in a letter received by the Whangarei County Council at its monthly meeting today from the employment division of the Department of Labour. The letter noted that the council was investigating suitable areas of land in connection with the proposed plan for the increased production of exportable vegetables. “The willingness of your council to co-operate in this matter is appreciated and I have to advise that the present position is that Government approval of the plan has not yet been received, the delay being occasioned by the lack of certain information from overseas. “It would therefore appear that even if approval is forthcoming, the scheme will have to be deferred until next season.” “We don’t need to do much about it,” commented the chairman (Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay). “We can see how the matter develops.” The letter was received.
