Rugby

t 'Special to '-‘Northern Advocate ’’] AUCKLAND. This Day.

Auckland Rugby representatives concluded their season on Saturday at Eden Park with one of their best performances of the season, defeating Wellington by 11 points to i">. Reinforced by Lambourne (hooker), Wright (three-quarter), Tindell (half) and Cooper (forward). Wellington was a different side Worn that which suffered defeat, at Whangarei during the week.

Schubert's Great Try

Most lasting memory the crowd carried away was a sensational try scored by the Auckland winger, L. Schubert, 25 mmutes after the start. When Auckland started an attack on their own side of halfway, the ball travelled along the backline to Molioy. who failed to gather a difficult pass.

Then Schubert; flashed into the picture, scooped the rolling ball to hit. chest, and side-stepped his marker. Knowles, in the same movement. He moved slightly infield until his path lay straight down the centre. Dance, the full-back, he left grasping air, evading him with a swerve that brought a roar of delight from the crowd. Then, with five or six Wellington men on his heels, he raced from near halfway to a try underneath the crossbar, outpacing Ins pursuers in a spectacular final burst. Of the other Auckland backs, Fearman and Hare were outstanding. Dance Again Plays Well. The Wellington backs were not a particularly impressive lot. The Aucklanders taught them a lesson in effective backing up and clean handling. Tindell, who maintained faultless service from the scrum and showed the marks of wide experience in his general play,..was outstanding. Dance, the full-back, resembled Wellington’s famous “Bunk” Pollock in his brilliant overhead fielding and courageous tackling, but could not match Hare’s raking touch-finders. Men who caught the selectors’ eyes in the packs must have been J. Gilmour, C. S. Pepper, T. Pearce and W. N. Carson, of Auckland, and E. Todd, A. Lambourne and F. Cassidy, of Wellington. The forwards’ speed and fine handling brought many thrills.
