To Help Patriotic Societies. The New Brighton Trotting Club has decided to allot half the net profits of the club for this season and for the duration of hostilities to patriotic societies.
Condition of Ajax
A Melbourne report regarding Ajax reveals that he is lame, but it is not certain whether the seat of the trouble is in the foot or the shoulder.
Leading Apprentice Injured. The leading Melbourne apprentice jockey, J. Purtell. had a bad fall in the Maiden Handicap at the Mooncc Valley races on Saturday, sustaining concussion and a leg injury.
Defaulter Improving. A message from Sydney states that Defaulter appeared at Randwick on Saturday, when ho cantered round on a specially watered track. He was afterwards examined by a veterinary surgeon, who stated that his leg had made considerable improvement, but it was still a long way from being fully recovered. Veterinary advice is that he should be given a spell, and certainly not raced, for the next two months.
3,000,000 Blowflies
Study of the blowfly, which, infests living sheep with its maggots, is being carried out by the Cawthron In* stitute, says the institute’s latest report. A study of flies throughout New Zealand is being made, os well as an intensive observation of their seasonal occurrence in certain districts. Using 30 fly-traps of Australian design, in ,an area of 30 acres of sheep country, scientists of the institute trapped some 3,000,000 blowflies during the course of 12 months. The investigation has not yet been completed.
