German Air Attack On Britain Fails
COULD NOT PENETRATE DEFENCES Allied Aircraft Batter Rhine Districts (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 6. | T IS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED THAT ENEMY 1 AIRCRAFT WERE REPORTED OVER THE EAST COAST OF ENGLAND EARLY THIS MORNING, BUT THEY DID NOT PENETRATE OUR DEFENCES. No damage was reported. The sound of gunfire was audible all along the Thames, suggesting action in the vicinity of the estuary. Gunfire on the eastern horizon was reported to be visible from London rooftops last night. There is no confirmation of this report. A “dogfight” between the British and German planes was reported between Rochester and Chatham. Twenty raiders bound for London were intercepted by gunfire and Spitfire Fighters. v . It is believed at least one German plane was brought down.
