Umawera Mr B. McDonald is visiting Auckland for a few days. Miss E. Templeton is home again from a short holiday spent in Auckland, as the guest of her sister, Mrs R. Edmonds. Mr and Mrs S. Rogers, of To Tio. have had as their guests Master Wynne and Miss Ngairo ,Calgon, of Kohimavr.ma. Auckiand.

A very pleasant social cyening was given by Mr and Mrs L. Ashworth last Wednesday, when they enter- , tained many of their numerous friends j nr the first anniversary of their wed- | dmg day. A .jolly time was spent in the playing of the various games and the solving of the competitions which had boon arranged by the host and hostess. Many congratulations from friends were received by Mr and Mrs Ashworth. To terminate a very enjoyable evening the host and hostess served a very appetising supper. Tennis Club’s Annual Kalb In spite of the fact that the attendance was smaller than had been anticipated, the Umawera Tennis Club's annual ball proved successful Ircm a social point of view. With the floor in excellent condition, the dancers had a very enjoyable time. As is usual with functions held at Umawera, the committee had worked hard and untiringly to assure the successful. running of their ball, and this work was reflected In the organisation in every department of the evening. The various methods of decorations used made a pretty sight above the heads of those who took the floor for each dance. This work was favourably commented on by the patrons. Walbridge's Orchestra supplied the musical rhythm, while Mr W. Po'stlcwaight was the M.C.

Mr E. Nisbet and partner won the Monte Carlo and the military twostep was won by Miss Joy Chapman and partner. The committee of the tennis club, upon whom the major work, fell in running the function, consists of Messrs B. Browne (president), R. Wooster (secretary) and W. Postlewaight, and Mesdames R. Beale, L. Tribe and Miss Brownlee.

Supper, always an important item at functions of this kind, was supplied and served by members of the club and surpassed many previous ones this season in both quality and quantity, and was greatly enjoyed by patrons. lioiitikolm

Mrs J. C. Martin, Wellington Street, has returned from a visit to Auclsland.

Mr and Mrs J. Hive, the Strand, who have been visiting Auckland, have returned to Russell.

Mr and Mrs A. Owen and Mr and Mrs P. Brady were Gisborne visitors to the Duke of Marlborough last week. Miss Hanah Kidd, who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs Cook, the Strand, has returned to Wellington.

The Misses Phyllis and Jessie Boucher, of Matauhi Road, have returned from a visit to Auckland. Kaikohe Miss L. Brown left by train on Tuesday morning to spend her annual holidays in Auckland. Miss C. Smith, who has been spending the school vacation as the guest of Mrs D’Ewes, has returned to Hikurangi. The Northland branch meeting of the Plunket Society was held at Mrs Guy’s residence. The nurse’s August reoort was as follows; New cases, 15; adults 13, babies 2. Cases under supervision, adults 9, babies 214: pro-school children, 49. The branch has received to date the sum of £3 13/- for the "Trilby King” Memorial Fund, and it was arranged to hold a card afternoon at Mrs Shaw’s residence on Friday, September 8, at 2.30 p.m., to supplement this fund. Members’ subscriptions for the month amounted to £3 5/-. Otaika Mrs Meredith Gunson has returned home from an enjoyable holiday spent with Mrs Lord, at Pukekohe, and Mrs E. J. Morgan, at St. Heller’s Bay. Miss Phyllis Gunson is staying with her brother at Tauraroa.

Miss May and Miss Doel have resumed their school duties after a fortnight’s vacation. Mr and Mrs Gordon Prescott have purchased a house at Gnerahi, and have taken up their residence in their new home.

Regret is expressed at the departure from the district of Mr and Mrs Calvert. senior, who are giving up farming. Mr T. R. Porter, of Waiotira, has taken over the farm, and. with his family, moved in on the 6th. inst. The Gtaika-Puwera branch of the W.D.F.U. held a successful dance in the Otaika Hall on Saturday evening. Mr A. Tavinor was M.C. A handsome geld coloured cushion donated by Mrs Dew was won by Mrs Bint (Maungakaramea). The confetti dance went lo Mr .and Mrs Tom Marsh, .and Mr and Mrs Bert Marsh were the lucky ones in the Monte Carlo. J.he prizes were donated by Mrs Lift, senr., and Mrs Macken. respectively. A ckver exhibition of tap dancing was given by Miss Craig, of Portland. Advantage was taken of the occasion to bid farewell to Mrs Calvert, senr.. who is unexpectedly taking her departure from among us. The president, Mrs Lilt, senr., spoke a few words on behalf of the W.D.F.U.. and presented Mrs Calvert with a leather zipp shopping bag. Mrs Calvert responded. .after which all joined in singing. "For She's a .lolly Good Fellow."

'The Olailwi Anglican Church committee recorded a vole of thanks to Mr and Mrs Calvert, sonr., for the help tiicj r have been to the church during their residence in the district. Miss Ran Clarke was elected to replace Mrs Calvert as secretary, and Mr A. Calvert, junr., is taking over his father's duties as organist. Cable advice has been received from Mrs Steed man, who wont Home last April, that her return to New Zealand in indefinitely postponed.
