Duce On Attempt To Call Parley
(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 4. Mussolini issued a statement in Rome last night outlining his .attempts to arrange a Five-Power Conference. His invitation was extended on Thursday.
On Friday, Britain had replied, but* by then Germany had started her military operations.
On Saturday, Mussolini intimated that there was still possibility of calling - a conference preceded by an armistice.
Hitler by then had x’eceived the Notes by Britain and France, and wished to know whether they were to be regarded in the nature of an ultimatum.
He asked for a delay of 24 hours. Later on Saturday afternoon, Britain and France intimated that they would only be prepared to enter a conference in the event of all German troops being withdrawn from Poland.
. This was communicated to Hitler by the Italian Government, which added that unless a reply was received from Herr Hitler within 24 hours, they would understand it was impossible for him to withdraw his forces.
