State Of War: Official Announcement

(Rocey/ed 10.0 a.m.)

LONDON, September 3. The Ministry of Information made the following announcement to-day:

“A state of war now exists between Britain and Germany. “At 11.15 a.m., Mr R. Dunbar, head of the Treaty Department of the Foreign Office, went to the German Embassy, where he was received by the Charge d’Affaires, Dr. Kordt.

“Mr Dunbar handed Dr. Kordt a notification that a state of war existed between Britain and Germany as from 11 a.m.

“This notification constituted the formal declaration of war.

“In accordance with customary diplomatic usage, full facilities are being extended to Dr. Kordt to enable him and the staff of the German Embassy to leave the country.

“Their departure will take place very shortly. “Facilities are also being extended equally to German Consulate officers to enable them to leave England.” An assurance has been given by Dr. Kordt that full facilities are being extended to enable Sir Nevile Henderson and the staff of the British Embassy in Berlin and British Consulate officers in Germany to leave the country.
