Our Campaign Will Continue!
Good Work by Pakaraka, Hikurangi, Kokopu Penny Contributions Give Malar ana 5/~ Dear Northlamlers, A small page to-day: but that just can’t be helped. With Great Britain taking a firm stand, to defend the liberty we all hold so clear, Northlamlers want news and more- news of events in Europe. f know that not one of my loyal followers will complain. Disappointing it may be, particularly as our compaign has progressed again-progressed with three splendid contributions from Kokopu. Pakaraka and Hikurangfi. with more money still to come from Tapuhi’s fancy dress ball. But it’s jolly to know that our fund is still growing and young Northlanders are working for others when some nations in Europe think selfishly of themselves. ‘What of our campaign?” the Office Boy asked gravely, as he read the sad news that Mr Chamberlain had declared a state of war existed between Great Britain and Germany. Our campaign will go on. Nobody can look into the future. While yesterday bore black tidings, nobody knows but that to-morrow, next week or next mouth may see bright skies again. Even if events in Europe are still unsettled our own New Zealand may 1 be little affected. Nobody can say exactly what will happen. Let us continue our good work, Northlamlers. If events make it appear unwise to arrange the trip according to plan, then, when those events are known. We will make an announcement accordingly. In that case we will remember that the funds sent in are YOURS—that your district will have the right to say what is to become of its contribution. Perhaps all the money wiil be banked until a similar trip can he arranged later; perhaps you will want your contribution diverted to some other good, cause; perhaps you will want the money returned for some specific purpose: that your school or your hapu or your district may decide upon. Confidently you may continue working with the full knowledge that, should our trip not eventuate next January, the money you raise will still be yours to spend. With that provision to satisfy the gloomy ones, let’s look on the bright side again. There certainly is a bright side so far as our Centennial Holiday Fund is concerned. Pakaraka deserves highest - praise this week. They promised a really big dance, and just how great a success that was you can judge by the £8 11/6 which came in this Week and gave Pakaraka second honours for most money collected. With £5 3/-, Hikurangi proved that the Kupe Club Hapu there is still working hard. I’ve known Kokopu has been working quietly since the picture evening there; but it’s contribution of £4 5/- to-day was a complete surprise. Weil done! Somehow the 5/- of Mataraua strikes me as a particularly fine contribution. It was raised, you see, not by any big effort, not by a competition, or by a dance, but by young Northianders conrtibuting their spare pennies to the Fund. A penny to any boy or girl means a chocolate stick, and to slip pennies into teacher’s pocket for the purpose of helping a schoolmate see the Centennlal Exhibition is my idea of true unselfishness. Here is the acknowledgment list for to-day: £sd £ s d Pakaraka . ~ . .. ■ ■ •• 8 116 Hikurangi: Errice Donaldson • ® Des Wyatt 1 0 0 Ray Belton .. 3 6 Roy Campbell 230 Shirley Cover .136 Dorothy Queripel . ® Kokopu .. •• 4 5 0 Mataraua 5 0 Total for Week £lB 4 6 In hand .. - £262 17 TOTAL £2Bl 1 8 "’ And now, my followers, let’s keep smiling and keep working.
