Gloucester Cup Favourites

In the five contests so far held for the Duke of Gloucester Cup, the only favourite to win has been Shy.

Change of Quarters, The hurdler Tutor, a half-brother to Might and Boomerang, has joined up with H. Gray’s team at Takanini.

Spear Chief Amiss. A report from Sydney states that it has been decided not to race Spear Chief at the spring meetings, owing to development of leg troubles.

Discharged From Hospital. The Southland jumping rider, T. J. Boyle, has been discharged from hospital at Christchurch, after being laid up as a result of injuries received in a fall at the Grand National meeting.

After a Record, Before the present American season is concluded, it is intended to start Greyhound, 1.55], against the present two-mile record of 4.10], established at Cleveland 14 years ago by Peter Manning. Name Altered, Promenade, who ran second at an outside price in the Trial Hunters’ Steeplechase at New Plymouth last Thursday, appeared among the original acceptors as After Dark, a name that was not allowed. He is a seven-year-old Resinous gelding, owned by Mr C. R. S. Paterson.

Beaulivre’s Programme. Although Beaulivr© \yill not be unduly raced this season, his programme will extend over the whole of the flat racing season in leading classic events, and his form at New Plymouth last week suggests that he will maintain the high standard he showed as a two-year-old. After the Wanganui Guineas this week, ho will go on to Avondale for the Guineas there. It is probable that he will then remain in Auckland for the Great Northern Guineas, even though there wall be an interval of about five weeks before that race.

Likely Youngster. The half-brother by Beau P'erc to High Caste, who is being trained at Ellerslio by R..S. Bagby, has had the name Royal Descent claimed for him. He is furnishing into a commanding colt, and in appearance compares more than favourably with others of his ago. New Judge's Box. Work in connection with the erection of the new judge’s box at Ellerslie was commenced last week. It will be about 20 feet further back, and also several feet higher than the old structure. The new building will be in use at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting on October 14 and 10.

Well-Known Horseman Passes. The death occurred at Riverton last week of Mr T. A. Langford, a well-known horseman of a few seasons back, and a member of one of the best-known sporting families in New Zealand. For some time Mr Langford had not kept the best of health, but his death at the age of 31 is deeply regretted. He was a twin brother of the successful jumping rider, V. Langford, who recently announced his retirement from race riding.
