Maoris Risk Fines To Procure Liquor

He was referring to a charge against William K. Heremaia, a Maori labourer, of Wheki Valley, who pleaded guilty to a charge of aiding and abetting some person unknown m the supplying of intoxicating liquor fo a native, 1 for consumption off licensed premises.
Mr Henderson said Heremaia 'was found to have two large bottles 1 of beer in a parcel, and a flask of whisky in his pocket. ' ’ (> Heremaia was fined £5 with 12/costs by' Mr G. N. Morris, SiM., who allowed him two months in which to pay.
A complaint alleging intoxication while in. of a horse and dray led to the appearance of Robert Mahanga. another Maori labourer, of Wheki Valley, on a similar charge. The police investigated the' complaint, and found Mahanga showing signs of liquor, but not intoxicated, said Mr Henderson. He had a small bottle of beer in his possession. Mahanga was lined £3 with 10/- > costs, being allowed a month,for payment.
