Coal At Kaikohe. As a result of the miner’s strike at Huntly, Kaikohe coal merchants are experiencing a “dry-rot.” No coal is available in the town, and residents and dining-room proprietors are forced to use wood fuel. Until the strike is finally settled there can be no hope of the situation being relieved. « # Basketbailers Return. After having participated in the annual tournament at Rotorua on Friday and Saturday, the Whangarei representative basketball teams returned home by bus yesterday. Although neither team reached the semi-finals the A team was second in its section play, and secured third place in the marching contest.
League Footballer Injured.
Receiving a kick on 'the head during the League football match between Whangarei and NorthcoteBirkenhead juniors bn Saturday afternoon, Cecil Mills, aged 18, of the Whangarei team, was taken to hospital suffering from slight concussion. His condition is satisfactory.
Northland Film Commences.
The filming of the North with a 16 mm. cinematograph film commenced
this morning. With a photographer, Mr K. Hayr, Centennial Organiser, left for the Far North this morning. The film is to be in colour and will be a travelogue of Northland. It is to be screened in the Northland reception room at the Centennial Exhibition. if. * • Radio Sets Popular. ; , Radio sets are in demand this week. Repair shops are receiving constant reminders from owners whose wirelesses are in for repair that the sets are wanted immediately. “There is more impatience now about delivery than ever before,” said a radio shop this morning. There had not, however, been any increased demand for sets equipped for shortwave reception. Apparently the rebroadcast service from New Zealand stations was filling the requirements of local listeners.
Kaitaia Scotsmen to Help. The Kaitaia Scottish Society has decided to give the net proceeds from the Scotch Concert, to be held shortly, towards the improvements now being made in the A. and P. grounds, where a more up-to-date motor camp is being provided.
♦ * * Street Lights In Kawakawa. Kawakawa now possesses four street lights in the main thoroughfare. As the electric power has not yet arrived in the district, the lights, which were recently connected by the Bay of Islands Power Board, are being supplied with power from the Regent Theatre plant. Although the lights are only operating for four nights a week, they have proved a decided acquisition to the town.
Persistent Rain. Persistent rain throughout the last three weeks has seriously inconvenienced a number of workers in the middle North. On practically every day over the period rain has fallen in the Kaikohe and surrounding districts. Hail storms have frequently occurred, and have proved a trial to citrus fruit growers at Kerikeri, where the season’s orange supply has been slightly hindered. Roads are in a shocking state, largely on account of the fact that the weather has been too wet to enable surfacemen to attend to the numerous potholes which have been caused throughout the district by the heavy showers.
