Licensing Breaches At Parua Bay Hotel
Breaches of the Licensing Act resulted in charges being brought at the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court this morning against the licensee and manageress of the Parua Bay Hotel. Cyril Roy Powell, the licensee, was charged with keeping open his premises after hours for the sale of with selling liquor, and with exposing liquor for sale, on August 6, while Zoe Beryl Ross, the manageress, was charged with supplying liquor. Powell was indisposed, and theliquor had been sold without his knowledge, said Mr D. Ross, who appeared for both licensee and manageress.
“In cases where a sale is made by an employee, I must fix a fine so that licensees do not keep out of the way for the purpose of selling liquor after hours," said Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., in fining each £3, with 12/- costs, on the selling charges, the other two being withdrawn. Harry Hay, Norman Matheson, Alphonse Faber and Richard Thomas Hearn, all labourer employed in the •P:W.D. No. 2 Cam pat Parua Bay, and Gordon Ruff, painter, of Whangarei, were each fined £1 with costs on charges of being on .the premises.
