Crisis Brevities
Windsors.—The London “Evening Standard” says the Duke of Windsor proposes to return to England immediately. The Duchess will probably follow.
Iron Cross.—The Berlin radio announces that Herr Hitler has decreed the reintroduction of the bestowal of the Iron Cross, and has created a new “Knight Class” of the order, replacing the order “Pour le Merite,” hitherto the highest German honour for bravery in the field or at sea.
Gowrie.—lt is reported that the Governor-General of Australia, Lord Gowrie, who had intended to return to England, will remain in Australia indefinitely. The coming to Australia of the Duke ,and Duchess of Kent, is also likely to be postponed indefinitely.
Collision. —Thirty-five people were killed and 50 were injured when a train evacuating people from Paris collided with another near Orleans.
Northern Ireland. —The Prime Minister of Northern .Ireland, Viscount Craigavon, endorsed Mr Chamberlain’s speech as reflecting the feeling of loyal 'citizens. He added that the people of Ulster would uphold Britain’s high reputation for patriotism. The Parliament of Northern Ireland will deal with emergency measures on Monday.
India.— The Viceroy of India, the Marquess of Linlithgow, has invited Mr Gandhi and other prominent Indian leaders to discuss the international situation with him.
