At the Seabright lawn tennis 'tournament the Davis Cup candidates are threatening to strike as a protest against the 1939 championship tennis ball. Every ranking player competing at Seabright, with the exception of Parker, signed a petition to the United States Lawn Tennis Association, asking that the ball be changed for one with a lighter nap, otherwise they declared they would refuse to compete in the eastern championships at Rye.
Hampshire had lost six wickets in its match with the touring West Indies team, when rain stopped play on Saturday. West Indies beat Surrey at the Oval by seven wickets. Scores: West Indies, 487 and 49 for three wickets. Surrey, 275 (J. F. Parker 100; Clarke 5 for G 4); follow-cn, 201 (Squires 58; Clarke 4 for 80). * # Australia beat the touring Palestine team by four goals to one in the fourth Soccer test played at Newcastle yesterday. * * * Queensland beat New South Wales by 23 points to 13 in the Rugby League representative match played at Brisbane on Saturday.
