Centennial Of The Pedal Bike
LONDON, July 29. The hundredth anniversary of the invention of the fh'st bicycle propelled by pedals will be commemorated in September by the unveiling of a plaque on the wall of a smithy in the village of Courthill, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, where a blacksmith, Kirkpatrick,MacMillan, made the machine. It is estimated by the British Cycle Makers’ Union that in the world today there are 61,000,000 bicycles. Last year Britain sent 576.458 abroad, of which 156,166 were sold to foreign countries —a record figure, representing a value of £486.304. The Earl and Countess of Athlone will participate in the Jubilee ol Southern Rhodesia in 1940. * * * A message from London states that the Boy Scouts international conference has decided to hold a jamboree in 1941 in France, the only country which extended an invitation.
