National Council Of Women: Whangarei Branch

At the annual meeting of the National Council of Women, Whangarei branch, those present were Mesdames G. N. Morris (University Women’s Club), A. Marsden Woods (Registered Nurses), W. Jones (Y.W.C.A.), W. J, Dawson (Whangarei Women’s Civic League), A. C. M. Finlayson (W.D.F.U.), T. J. Evans, A. K. Lambly, and Misses L. Swayne (Registered Nurses), L. Broughton-Carr (Women’s Club), and J. T. Milne (Pan-Pacific Association).

The secretary reported that the Catholic Women’s League would send a delegate to the next meeting. Mrs G. N. Morris (president) read the first annual report. Mrs Marsden Woods, on behalf of the committee, thanked Mrs Morris. The audited balance sheet was read and adopted, and it was resolved to send a letter of thanks to Mr Marsden Woods for his assistance in preparing the balance sheet. The committee decided to forward the following remit to the Mayor; “That in the event of a meeting being called for any emergency, the members of the N.C.W. (Whangarei branch) declare themselves willing and eager to assist with any form of organised work.”

Mrs Marsden Woods reported that the Registered Nurses’ Association had approved the suggestion that women’s organisations of the town might work for the establishment of a rest home for elderly ladies. Mrs G. N. Morris read a report by Miss Mildred Trent, Dominion President, giving a summary of the work covered by the N.C.W. for the past years.

Satisfaction was expressed that the introduction of women police, for which the N.C.W. had worked for the last 25 years, had recently been decided upon by the Government.

Miss Trent was able to record that

the council’s representations regarding the x-estriction on the importation of pernicious literature had resulted in. a stricter censorship of literature coming into New Zealand. Representations concerning housing had been favourably received. One of the most burning questions of our time, the refugee problemfrwas discussed. It was decided to urge the Government to consider the reversal of its present policy of exclusion, and to admit a reasonable number of selected refugees from Europe. It was x’eported that other matters in which the Government has been appimached included. —Borstal Institutes, the treatment of young offenders, control of drinking .at dances, occupational centres for backward children, abolition of restrictions against the employment of married women, and pensions for single women. The branches, it was stated, had studied .and interested themselves in a wide variety of subjects, including broadcasting, housing, treatment of patients in mental hospitals, motherhood endowments, domestic training schools, the law as it affects women, abuses of the hire purchase system. Election of officers resulted in the same committee being returned as for 1938.

A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Morris for carrying out her duties as president in such a capable manner, and to Miss J. I. Milne for acting as secretary.
