Women’s Institutes
Russell A spirit of goodwill and friendliness prevailed in Brooker’s Hall, Russell, on Saturday afternoon, when representatives of the Paihia, Opua, Taumarere, Oromahoe, Kaikohe and Waima Women’s Institutes gathered in full force to celebrate the fifth birthday of the Russell branch. Mi’s C. Dean, president of the Russell Institute, welcomed the guests, who numbered about 80.
The roll-call, “A funny story,” proved one of the most popular items of the afternoon.
Many ingenious designs were shown in the competition, the best homemade paper hat, which was won by Miss Mavis Bassett of Russell.
A comedy radio play, entitled “A Girl for the Hall,” provided hilarious entertainment. Violin and pianoforte solos were given by Mrs F. Fowler and Miss Inez Staples.
Before cutting the handsome birthday cake, with its five candles, Mrs Johnson, of Waima, president of the Bay of Islands Federation, congratulated the Russell branch on attaining its fifth birthday. The youngest member, Miss Inez Staples, blew out the candles, and the cake was cut and handed round with afternoon tea, which concluded the afternoon’s entertainment.
Mangonui The Mangonui Women’s Institute held the monthly meeting, in McKay’s Hall, the vice-president, Mrs J. Feisst, presiding. After business had been discussed, a competition on “Parts of the body” was won by Mrs W. A. Wrathall and Mrs Subritzky. The roll-call was “Interesting articles from the daily newspaper.” The competition for the best pair of worked d’oyleys was won by Mrs Feisst, with Mrs C. W. Harris second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Stan Harris and Miss Phoebe Wrathall. Fairburn " The July meeting of the Fairburn Women’s Institute was held in the hall, Mrs Lupton presiding over a good attendance. A number of visitors were welcomed and a new member enrolled. The meeting was opened with the reading of the aspirations,' and the singing of the Institute hymn, after which a good deal of business was transacted.
An interesting description ■ of a trip by road from Kaitaia to Spirits’ Bay was given by Mrs Coulter. The monthly gift was won by Mrs Lupton, ■ and something for nothing was won by Mrs Vazey. The roll-call was a recipe, and the competitions were: —Sewing: Any piece of fancy work or knitting; cooking, cake or biscuits made with one egg; flowers, a lady’s spray. An enjoyable meeting concluded with the serving of afternoon tea.
Mfitapouri The Matapouri Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on July 18. There was a fair attendance of members and several visitors. It was decided to hold a birthday dance on August 18. During the .afternoon Miss Wright, the district nurse, gave an interesting and comprehensive address on first aid in the case of fractures. Mrs Harrison, of Mafua, gave a demonstration of brass work which was enjoyed by all present. The competitions for the month resulted.—Best bloom: Mrs Milligan 1, Mrs O’Carroll 2, Mrs Watson 3. Knitted baby’s singlet: Mrs Ted Clements 1, Mrs Morrison 2, Mrs O’Carroll 3. Wholemeal scones; Mrs Morrison 1, Mrs O’Carroll 2, Mrs Clements 3. Mrs O’Carroll was hostess for the day. Opuawhanga Members entertained the ladies of the district at their July meeting, Mrs Croft presided. The roll call was “Soup recipes,” and the competition “Flour bag article.” This was well contested, the winner being Mrs F. Huwiler, with Mrs Weaver gaining second place. Mrs G. Whatmough gave an intersting talk and demonstration on first aid. The social hour was spent in games and competitions which were enjoyed by all. Mrs H. Whimp thanked members for a very pleasant afternoon and the singing of the Institute song closed the meeting. Mrs S. Nankivell acted as hostess.
Hikurangi Tho Hikurangi Women’s Institute held its usual monthly meeting on Wednesday, Mrs Thomas presiding. Atter the business had been dealt with, Mrs Cossill gave an interesting demonstration on the making of paper flowers. The competition for the afternoon was the best article made out of a half a yard of organdie, the prize going to Mrs'Spiers. A visitor, Mrs Young, was the judge. The roll call was “The uses of lemon and salt” and after the hostesses had served afternoon tea a short time was spent in a game, Musical Parcel, Mrs Williams being tho winner. , The meeting closed with tho singing 1 of the National Arnhem.
Wainui-Ahipara
The monthly meeting of the WainuiAhipara Institute was held at the home of Mrs Stuart Masters. The president presided over a very fair attendance of members. The monthly competition for a plate of scones was won by Mrs Morrison, with Mrs Charlie Masters second.
Two other competitions were won by Mrs Athol Masters and Mrs Horsford.
A pleasant afternoon was brought to a close, with a dainty afternoon tea. served by Mrs Morice and Mrs Shirley Masters.
Te Puhi At the July meeting of the Te Puhi Women’s Institute, Mrs A. Tracey presided ever a good attendance and welcomed visitors from the Kaitaia district. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode, followed by the reading of the Creed and singing of “Comrades and Friends.” Mrs A. Tracey gave an outline of the federation meeting held at Kaitaia.
Lunch was served by the members. “Something for nothing,” donated by Mrs E. White, was won by Mrs D. Tracey and a competition was won by Mrs A. Tracey, with V. Edwards second.
Games were won by Miss Brockbank and Mrs Edwards. The competition for the month resulted as follows: Seniors: “Slice of toast,” Mrs D. Tracey 1, and Mrs A. White 2.

Sewing section: “A toy”: Mrs A. White 1, Mrs D. Tracey 2. Pair of worked d’oyleys: Mrs W. Dawson and Mrs A. Edv/ards, equal 3, Mrs Buckingham 3. In the junior section, Miss Brockbank was the only competitor. She was awarded a first place for a pair of worked d’oyleys and a second for a piece of marble cake and a second also for three clusters of flowers.
The prizes which were won for six months’ competition, were presented. Several snapshots of the members were taken by the president's son.
Waipu The monthly meeting of the Waipu Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday. Members were gratified that the dance which they organised to help the Centennial Fund, realised £3O. Mrs A. Clarke, of Whareora, gave- a most interesting talk on diet, which was much appreciated. Afternoon tea was served by members.
Tauraroa The Tauraroa Women’s Institute celebrated their sixth birthday with a very successful dance in the Tauraroa Hall on Friday night. Dancers were present from all parts of the district. At the conclusion of supper the president, Mrs J. Standring, expressed the Institute’s appreciation of such a large attendance. Mrs A. Hayward made a presentation to the Tauraroa Women’s Institute on behalf of the Mangapai Institute. Mrs Standring was presented with a bouquet from Tauraroa members by Mrs L. Bicknell, of Waiotira. The oldest member, Mrs M. M. Thomson, then lit the candles on the beautiful two-tier birthday caice, made by Mrs A. W. Plaisted and iced by Miss J. Thomson. The cake was cut and handed around. A delicious home-made supper was served by Institute members. Items on the guitar and harmonica by Mr G. Windley, of Maungakaramea, were well received. Dance music was supplied by Goodison’s band.
The winners of competition dances were Mrs E, Gunson and Mr J. Standring, first couple on the floor; Mr and Mrs A. Hayward, confetti; Mr and Mrs W. Finhi, Monte Carlo.
A guessing competition was won by Mr FI. Wenzlick.
