Kaitaia B Look Champs In Mangonui
to “Northern Advocate ”] KAITAIA, This Day.
With only two more games for the Bell Shield, emblem of supremacy in the Mangonui senior championship, Kaitaia B appear in an unassailable position.
On Saturday Manukau gave them a hard match, as they had done in their first encounter, but Moses Yates’ team finished strongly to score two tries towards the end of the second half. Kaitaia A undertook the arduous journey to Te Kao, taking three and a half hours for the 50 miles, only to find the home team a hard proposition, the game ending in a draw. Mangonui failed to put in an appearance at Houhora and forfeited the game, the first default this season.
There was a sensational climax in the junior curtain-raiser between Kaitaia A, leaders of the competition, and Awanui A, who had not won a game this season. Half way through the second spell Kaitaia led by 12 points to nil and appeared winners all the way. Then Awanui scored three tries, the last right on time, to win by one point in a most exciting finish. Runners-up, Kaitaia B, were also defeated by Awanui’s second string. Herekino avenged their first round defeat by Houhora; thus the position of the leaders remained unaltered. Results:—
Senior. Kaitaia B 8, Manukau 0. Kaitaia A 3, Te Kao 3. " Junior. Awanui A 13, Kaitaia A 12. Herekino 18, Houhora 8. Awanui 13, Kaitaia B G.
