Britain Watches Defence In Middle East

(Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 21. A message from Ankara states that Britain has advised the Government that Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean, will visit Istanbul on August 20, aboard thh flagship Warspite. Political authorities attach the greatest importance to the visit. Commenting on the appointment of Lieutenant-General Sir Achibald Wavell as General Officer Command-ing-in-Chief, to command the British land forces in the Middle East, the “Daily Telegraph” says: “Recent commitments by Britain to Turkey and Greece increase the responsibility that she already has in the Middle East. In these circumstances, it is an elementary precaution to create the new post specifically charged with the defence of an area vital to Empire communications.”

The military correspondent of “The Times” says: “The step is a wise one.”
