Charge For Use Of Loading Platform

A charge of 1/- is to be made for the use of the town wharf loading platform, where goods unleaded or loaded have not been or are not to be carried by sea. This charge is irrespective of the nature or weight of the article handled.

Decision to this effect was made by the Whangarei Harbour Board on Friday, on the motion of Mr R. H. Allan, seconded by Mr P. Gardner. “I have ascertained that this platform is used frequently for the loading on to or unloading from lorries of motor cars, tractors and other heavy machinery. Inconvenience, I am informed, is sometimes suffered by the shipping companies in having to shift drums of oil and other goods to make room for such loading and unloading,” Mr W. M. Fraser, engineer, stated in a

report. The board’s ramp and platform ‘ is regarded as a convenience for the whole district, and it is not suggested or desirable that the general use oi these facilities be disallowed, but it is reasonable that the users should pay for the convenience. Mr Fraser stated.

He recommended that the charge be imposed. Mr J. A. Finlayson expressed reluctance to make a charge unless the loading platform was being abused.
