“Referendum On Set Price Waste Of Money”
[Special to “Northern Advocate "] DARGAVILLE, This Day. At the annual meeting of the Ruawni Co-op. Dairy Co., when the chairman of directors, Mr, .1. Irwin, presided over an attendance, including women, of 250. the question oi! guaranteed prices for dairy produce was discussed, every speaker supporting the principle of the guarantee. “We should intimate to the Government," said Mr. G. Biggar, “that it is a waste of public money taking a referendum on the question. We do not quires the immediate assistance of the Government in the direction of adjusting costs without wage reductions, so that the dairy farmer may enjoy a higher standard of living as was intended under the guaranteed price legislation." Committee’s Report Favoured Mr. W. S. Wallace, a director of the company, reiterating that farmers did not want to go back on the guaranteed price system, moved: “That this meeting of suppliers to the Ruawai Co-op. Dairy Co., in supporting the principle of the guaranteed price system, respectfully respects the Government to uphold the standards of values established by the Advisory Committee for the 1938-39 season.” The motion was carried by 44 votes to 17. Mr. J. Irwin, who has been a director for 17 years and chairman for 11 years, intimated that he was not seeking re-election. Steps were taken -to recognise his services.
