A Thousand Miles A Minute
A thousand miles of engine wear can be caused in the first minute after a car starts on a cold morning. That is the rather startling observation made during a series of tests recently conducted by the Vacuum Oil Company. This excessive wear can result from the use of heavy bodied summer oils during the cold winter months. The thicker oil is sluggish and slower to get into circulation with the result that there is a period of “dry running” at starting, during which considerable engine wear can occur. With one or two “dry” starts daily, as much wear can be caused in one week as in a whole year’s normal running.
Added to this, starting on such an oil requires twice as much power to turn the engine over. For these reasons, the Vacuum Oil Company is making a strong recommendation to motorists to drain out summer oil from car crankcases, and after flushing with a quality flushing oil, to refill with the special winter oil, Mobiloil Arctic. This recommendation applies to practically every modern car on the market, but in the few isolated cases, where, owing to peculiarities in engine design and lubricating systems, a different oil should be used, this is clearly set out in the well-known Mobiloil chart of recommendations.
