I.R.A. Violence Suppression
(Received 2.0 p.m.) LONDON, July 19. The Prevention of Violence Bill gives the Home Secretary the same powers of dealing with Irish Republican Army suspects as with undesirable aliens, including the right to refuse admittance and power to support people who have lived in Britain less than 20 years. He would also bo empowered to make suspects register to check the activities of those moving from one place to another. Suspects may be arrested without a warrant. The Bill applies to all citizens of the Empire, but will be restricted to Jrish Republican Army suspects. The Cabinet rejected the institution of a passport system for Eire and the proclamation of the Irish Republican Army as an illegal organisation as inadequate.
