$ There exists in Berlin an organis- | ation known as the Deutscher Aus- | lander Dienst, translated (by itself) f as “the Welcome to | “WELCOME TO Germany Service,” ? GERMANY .” says the “Specta- ? tor.” It is prepared |to give information and advice to iniquirors on any question—a very useful office to perform—and meanwhile ! it is despatching to various addresses jin England unexpected and unsolicited I translations of various articles by Dr. I Goebbels.

It is not very sagacious propaganda, for Dr. Goebbels is not an

ideal instrument of appeal to the average Englishman.

However, the articles are admirably translated and admirably printed, and Dr. Goebbels, like the organisation that circulates him, is prepared to give information on any subject —to assure us, for example, that “The Anschluss with Austria, the solution of tire Sudeten German problem, and the creation of a Protectorate in Bohemia and Moravia are historical events which have taken place to the satisfaction of all parties directly interested, and without any bloodshed whatsoever.” In fact, complete satisfaction guaranteed.

There was, says “The Times,” certainly more insured employment in Great Britain in May than at any former time, AN EMPLOYMENT and it is probPEAK. able, though the

fact is not yet statistically established, that more people were in paid occupations than ever before. The statistical hesitation on the second point is because there may have been many transfers of workpeople from uninsured to insured occupations, the measurement of which is not possible at short intervals, and there may also have been a movement out of agriculture into other industries which will not be revealed until the annual exchange of insurance books. In the meantime those transfers will not be deducted, because unknown, from the agricultural figures, but the additions to the employment in other industries will have been included in the latest estimates. Subject to these reservations it may be concluded that Great Britain reached a new high level in employment of all kinds in May. In insured employment, the increase between mid-April and mid-May was 156,000, bringing the total to 12,667,000. A comparison with May of last year shows an increase of 440,000.
