Bay Junior Teams Under Review
The junior teams taking part in the Bay contest, have produced really outstanding football when compared with the activities of the previous two seasons.
This year it was necessary to zone the junior? into two sections, Okaihau has been victorious 'in one zone, and it appears that Taumarerc will win the other.
Okaihau possesses a great pack and consequently has achieved the biggest part of its success from the forwards, who have never let the team down. The backs are of a fair standard, though one or two individuals are outstanding, but they cannot be compared with the Kaikohe A back line, which is the best in the competition. Taumarerc is a good all-round team with several promising players, but it seems extremely doubtful whether they will bo able to defeat Okaihau in the final g?me in this year's competition.
Kaikohir A Outstanding,
The ‘truly outstanding team is Kaikohe A. which possesses some of the finest juniors ever to play in the Bay, and it was only the tact that the draw was against the team which prevented it from defeating Okaihau on points and thereby winning the grade. The players are clean .and conscientious.
Kaikohe B is a team which has achieved little success, mainly on account of repeatedly introducing new players. If this team had concentrated on the one 15 it would have been higher up the ladder.
After starting the season in an excellent manner, Ohaeawai gradually lost form, and could not produce the spectacular football which it could have produced. The team is evenly balanced, with a fast pack and a reliable back line.
A team of battlers, the Oromahoe Club always turns out men. who play clean football in .a very enjoyable manner. This team is perhaps the best sporting side in the grade and takes every beating with a smile. For a new club, the Mol.atau team produced quite good football throughout the earlier games. This team possesses no sensational players, but the boys are keen, and are the makings of an excellent junior combination.
Unreliable Sides,
Moerewa is unreliable, but if properly trained the one or two promising players which it possesses would be able to achieve a large amount of success on the football field.
Starting late in the season, the State Forest fifteen impressed only by its rough tactics. The team could be developed it the players were keen, but in this season’s games they did not seem to be very eager to be taught sound rugby.
Handicaped by lack of supporters, the Opua club has nevertheless carried out this season's programme in an excellent manner, and deserves credit for the good football it has produced under adverse conditions.
Maromaku is another team which deserves its share of praise. Although it has the makings of a fine forward pack, it has never been able to finalise any really successful combinations, but should do, better next season.
